Several years ago, I founded a “nano-distillery” in Northport, Michigan. At first, Northport Rum Co. was primarily focused on producing rum, but I often experimented in creating other spirits with various flavor profiles.

One day, I set out to make an apple liqueur with a bit of cinnamon in it. However, I had accidentally purchased an apple flavoring that contained cherry. Much to my surprise, the resulting product was far better than I anticipated. Many of my tasting room guests were eager to try this new flavor and demanded that I produce more, but because my facility was so small, I was unable to scale up production.
I reached out to a company I was familiar with and asked them if they could recreate what I had made. After tasting multiple batches, we perfected the recipe. Now the spirit needed a name befitting its taste.
Augustum is a portmanteau of august (great) and gustum (taste). The reason for the “III” on the label is because it is an auspicious number for the brand:
- The spirit is a blend of three flavors.
- It took three rounds of batches to arrive at the current recipe.
- My suffix is “III” and I wanted to put my personal mark on it.
Regardless of my story, I hope you enjoy this spirit. We look forward to toasting life’s moments with you over a glass of Augustum!
